Nextbigfuture interviewed Danny Shapiro, Nvidia’s Senior Director of Automotive. Nio and Nvidia had announced the use of the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip (SoC) for NIO’s new generation of electric vehicles.
NVIDIA’s Orin has developer kits available now and will sample chips later this year. The supercomputer, Adam, will use four ORIN processors to achieve 1 PETAOP processing.
NVIDIA Orin is the worlds highest-performance AV and robotics processor. Each Orin chip will provide 254 trillions of operations per second (TOPS) while also being able to scale down to entry-level ADAS/Level 2 use cases (10 TOPS/5 watts). NIO will feature four high-performance Orin SoCs in each of its EVs to achieve an industry-leading performance of 1,000+ TOPS.
Adam will have seven times the processing of the Tesla HW3 Full Self Driving (FSD) and should be twice as fast the Tesla HW4 based on rumors of the Tesla HW4.
NIO, Li Auto, and Xpeng are all developing their smart, electric fleets with NVIDIA. Nio, Li Auto and Xpeng are the hottest chinese electric car makers.
Tesla HW3 and HW4
China Times reported that Tesla is working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to develop Hardware 4 of the FSD. Elon Musk at Autonomy Day said HW4 is about 3x better than HW3.
HW4 rumor: TSMC 7nm. Tesla + Broadcom joint development. Initial production 2020 Q4. SoW

NVIDIA DRIVE With Mercedes and Volvo
NVIDIA is also working with Mercedes and Volvo.
Mercedes-Benz MBUX Hyperscreen was powered by NVIDIA AI.
Every necessary driving feature is delivered with a single touch on the MBUX Hyperscreen. The 56-inch wide MBUX Hyperscreen learns driver preferences for an intuitive experience. Front-seat passengers get a dedicated screen for entertainment and ride information that doesnt interfere with the drivers display. Front seat passenger can share content with others in the car.
NVIDIA DRIVE
NVIDIA DRIVE is an open AV development platform for software developers worldwide. It includes DRIVE Software plug-ins that allow partners to integrate their technology with the DRIVE AGX system. NVIDIA is working on all levels of driving autonomy.
NVIDIA has a separate robotics group. They work with factory robots and delivery bots, and drones. The robotic systems need to have interaction for grabbing and actuating. The NVIDIA Jetson technology need to work in smaller and lower power devices than the self-driving car systems.
