Gary Neville says he does not know what Jurgen Klopp’s problem is after the Liverpool manager hit out at his reference of You’ll Never Walk Alone.
After Liverpool’s draw with Leeds on Monday evening, Klopp criticised Neville for referencing You’ll Never Walk Alone in his passionate call to arms over the European Super League on Sunday.
Arguing that references to You’ll Never Walk Alone should be ‘forbidden’, Klopp claimed that Neville has not been in the hot seat in his career.
He said: “You can be emotional, but I wish Gary Neville would be in a hot seat somewhere, and not everywhere where the most money is, he was at Manchester United with the most money there, at Sky where the most money is, all these kinds of things, so dont forget we have nothing to do with it.”
It prompted a response from Neville, who said he could not understand why Klopp had taken issue with him – especially when they appear to share the same views on the Super League.
He said: “Why? Whys it not fair? Ive handed enough insults out over the years to Liverpool, yesterday was nothing to do with insulting Liverpool Football Club.
“I dont know why Im living in his head, to be honest with you. I dont know what spiked him.
“Yesterday was an impassioned plea from me about protecting football in this country and my biggest disappointment was with Manchester United and Liverpool and I think Ive equally distributed enough to both clubs in the last 24 hours.

“So, I dont know what his problem is. I had a 25-year career at Manchester United and an 11-year career at Sky and Ive worked hard for that.
“Ive not been handed it, I didnt go where the most money is, I didnt have choices. Sir Alex Ferguson didnt stay: Gary, do you want to stay here every year?, so I have no idea what hes going on about. I employ over 600 people in a city, Ive tried to look after them during a pandemic, is that not a hot enough seat for him?
“Hes done a great job at Liverpool, Ive got no problem with Jurgen Klopp, I loved his team but the fact of the matter is hes spikey, hes been let down by his owners.”
He continued: “That man, were on the same page, were on the same team but he cannot say what he wants to say and I can.
“I accept that because the Jurgen Klopp we all know hates every little single thing about this, more than I do, more than you do because it goes against everything in his life that he believes in and hes been let down, hes been let down by his owners and so have those players at Liverpool.
“Ive got nothing against those players, theyve been unbelievable these last few years.”
Neville believes supporters of Manchester United and Liverpool are so strongly against a European Super League that a truce has formed between the two fanbases – to such an extent that Jamie Carragher would be welcomed at Old Trafford if he were there to make a stand against it.
He said: On this issue, theres the biggest rivalry. Honestly, he could go and stand on the Stretford End in a protest before the match and hed be left alone and supported.
“Im not sure I could go and stand on the Kop, but I genuinely believe on this issue, I could go and stand on the Kop and it would be together.
“On this particular issue, there is a truce, forget it, this is more important. I said before: forget your allegiances.
“The reason were critical of these two clubs is because we expect more of them, we expect more of them.
